lifestyle(a short story)- ''the girl I've always wanted to be"

It was a Saturday morning. As I spread the clothes I had watched on the hanger at the backyard of our two-storied commercial apartment, I heard the loud laughter from the other side of the compound. That laughter was familiar. I didn’t need anyone to tell me it was her, Adanna, the girl her family just moved in few months ago. They lived at the second-floor of the building while ours was at the first floor.

Adanna had the teenage dream life. You know like in the movies. She was the first child of a family of three children. Her siblings a boy and a girl, Ebuka and Mmachi. Her father worked in an oil company and drove the latest Benz while her mum was a lecturer at Godfrey Okoye private university here in Enugu city where we stayed. We attended the same high school. Adanna wasn’t just pretty she was also intelligent and smart. She only started school at sky Ville high few months ago but everyone including the teachers were familiar with her. Not that I was jealous of her or anything but I just admired her demeanor a lot. And sometimes I wish I was like her.

But before Adanna, who was I? after all they just packed in few months ago. Alright my name is ‘’Somadina” Soma for short. I have five siblings two brothers and three sisters. I am the third child of the family. My father works as a pharmacist at the states clinic while mom has a boutique where she sales women’s wear. I’ve always come top of my class since fourth grade and I’ve had just one bestie since fourth grade Ifeoma she was more like a sister to me. I sure wasn’t satisfied with all these things, was I?

“hello soma” I heard Adanna greet as she approached where I was “hi Ada” I replied wondering how she knew my name since we haven’t spoken since the day they moved in. “can I give you a helping hand? She offered ‘’its okay Ada this is easy stuff for me” I declined.  “all right soma I actually brought
my literature assignment to see if you could help me out” is this really happening was all I could ask myself as Adanna flipped the pages of her note book “you see I really don’t understand it very well” she added “are you sure you need my help in this Adanna…. I mean you’re like the best in literature” I replied after what I would call a brief moment of silence, “I thought you didn’t see me the way others did. I’m really sick of everyone expecting me to just know everything and keep being so perfect to the extent that I’m afraid to just be me” Adanna stated to my surprise as she sat on the little caved pavement close to where the basket of the clothes I was washing stood  “I’m really tired I feel like I’m wearing  glass slippers and then everyone is watching me and I with just one little slip I could just fall” this time, there were tears in her eyes still surprised, I wiped my hands dry and went closer to where she sat. “I’m really sorry for coming to bore you with my problems but I just need someone to talk to and I’ve always admired and been wanting to be friends with you for a while now” wiping her tears out, she continued “sometimes, I wish I could be like you, you know, you’re so free to be you and still everyone likes you for who you are but in my case I feel like I have to keep pleasing everyone just to be liked and accepted”  at this point, I didn’t know what to do or say I went closer to her and hugged her assuring her we could do the assignment together and that we can always be friends. So crafty how things can turn out to be. Adanna the girl I’ve always wanted to be also wanted to be like me.
